The picture on the right hand side is the snapshot of the cover of a novel, published by Penguin. The novel had won the Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 1986, and is considered as one of the finest examples of contemporary Indian literature.

Answer: The author is Sunil Gangopadhyay, one of my personal favourites, and who passed away recently. The novel is Those Days, translated from the original Bengali work, titled Sei Somoy.
The novel is set in the late 19th Century Bengal, against the backdrop of the Bengal Renaissance and the 1857 Sepoy uprisings. Though a piece of historical fiction, it incorporates the major historical characters from that period, viz. Vidyasagar, Michael Madhusudan Dutt etc. and the author has remained true in his descriptions of those days.
