The picture is that of a gunner of the Royal Scots captured in the Netherlands in 1944 during the WWII.

The weapon being fired by the soldier is a light machine gun, which was adopted by Britain in the 1930s and used in various roles until 1991. While best known for its role as the British and Commonwealth forces' primary infantry light machine gun (LMG) in World War II, it was also used in the Korean War and saw service throughout the latter half of the 20th century, including the 1982 Falklands War and the 1991 Gulf War. Although fitted with a bipod, it could also be mounted on a tripod or vehicle-mounted.

The ugly looking single-shot pistol had its origins in the Joint Psychological Committee and was designed in 1942 by the Inland Guide Lamp Manufacturing Division of an automobile manufacturer.

The original engineering drawings label the barrel as "tube", the trigger as "yoke", the firing pin as "control rod", and the trigger guard as "spanner". Ultimately, a million of these weapons were produced. Extra rounds of ammunition could be stored in the pistol grip.

A crude and clumsy weapon, it was never intended for front line service. It was originally intended as an insurgency weapon to be mass dropped behind enemy lines to resistance fighters in occupied territory. A resistance fighter was to recover the weapon, sneak up on an Axis occupier, kill or incapacitate him, and retrieve his weapons.

Answer: This photo was captured near the coast of Normandy in France, on 6th June 1994, the D-Day, during last phases of the second World War. The photograph shows Allied soldiers getting down from the landing vessel in their march towards the beach at Normandy, during the Operation Neptune (popularly called Normandy Landings. Actually, the entire battle plan was divided in to multiple operations and responsibilities distributed to different task groups). After this successful operation, the tide of the WWII totally turned in favour of the Allied nations, as the Axis powers gradually started to lose their hold.

Answer: The answer is BEDFORD vehicles, manufactured by Vauxhall Motors. As a young kid, in the 1980's and even in 1990's, I have seen many of the Bedford trucks, being used mainly for carrying soil used for earth-filling or bricks for construction purposes. Mos of these trucks were of WWII vintage. Even today, one may come across Bedford trucks in rural India, while in Pakistan, its a certainty, to be found on highways. An urban legend associated with these trucks was that the drivers had to put the vehicle in back-gear instead of applying the brakes, to get the trucks to stop immediately. As with most urban legends, most probably, it is untrue!

Another visual clue. The question has two parts and one needs to answer both.

You can see the actual photographic capture of an iconic event in the history of the world. Many films, over the years, have used this event as a backdrop in their story. The event has also been dramatically reenacted in numerous feature films, documentaries and TV shows.

For getting the full credits, you'll need to identify the event depicted in the photograph and tell me the name of the Oscar winning film released in 1998, which started with the dramatic representation of this particular event.

Answer: As usual, my anonymous friend is absolutely right. The photograph shows the action on D-Day in 1944, when the Allied troops landed at Normandy in France. This actually started a chain reaction and was the first time during WWII that the Germans lost in mainland Europe.
The 1998 Oscar winning film is Saving Private Ryan by Steven Spielberg. The film opened with the D-Day scene when a group of US soldiers landed on the Omaha beach and their fight with the entrenched Germans.
